Virtual interviewing has quickly become a go-to for employers and candidates during the pandemic. It’s important to treat a virtual interview the same way you would an in-person meeting: with preparedness, professionalism and confidence! However a video call can make it feel difficult to truly connect with a family the way you might face-to-face. That’s why we’re sharing our top 5 tips so you can make a great first impression!

DO A TEST RUN:
  • A few days before your interview, download whichever software platform you plan to use for the interview to ensure you will be able to access it and be on time for your call.
  • Connect to the interview at least 10-15 minutes early in case you have issues logging in.
DECIDE WHERE TO INTERVIEW:
  • Find a quiet, well-lit place to sit, preferably with a blank wall behind you.
  • Do not have a coffee cup, personal belongings or any other items in view.
  • Make sure there is nothing in view that will distract the interviewer or make a bad impression.
PREPARE THE SAME WAY YOU WOULD FOR AN IN-PERSON INTERVIEW:
  • Read over the job description and write down any questions you have for the family.
  • Review your resume and think about which skills and experiences to highlight for this particular role.
  • Dress professionally.
  • Make sure your video platform is working correctly and that you will not be interrupted.

DURING THE INTERVIEW:
  •  Greet your interviewer with a smile, ask them how they have been handling the impact of COVID-19,, fun projects the family has been working on at home, etc.
  • If you meet the children, greet them with their names and be engaging.
  • Listen to the needs of the client and answer questions thoughtfully.
FOLLOW-UP:
  • Be sure to send an email 24 hours after your interview, thanking the family for their time.
  • Express your enthusiasm for the position and why you feel you’re a great fit for the position!
